History

Founding

NATPA was founded on February 16, 1980, at the University of Chicago. The South California Chapter was established later as an Ad Hoc Committee was formed to organize the local chapter.

Growth

The S Cal Chapter grew from 15 founding members to nearly 100 — becoming NATPA’s largest and most active chapter among its 11 regional chapters.

Community Context

At the time of the chapter’s establishment (1985), there were 45 active Taiwanese associations/organizations in the greater Los Angeles area.

Publications

  • “S Cal Tribune” (南加學壇) — Launched later, publishing weekly articles in 國際日報 and 太平洋時報
  • “Speakers Bureau” — Established to promote academic discourse in the community
