Background

The award is named after 賴和 (Lai Ho), the “Father of Taiwanese New Literature” (臺灣新文學之父). Lai Ho (1894–1943) was a Taiwanese writer, poet, physician, and social activist who served as editor of the literary section of Taiwan Minpao (臺灣民報) and trained and influenced many well-known Taiwanese writers.

Dr. Albert S. Lai, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, received the award in recognition of his pioneering scholarship in Taiwanese American Studies and his contributions to documenting and analyzing the Taiwanese diaspora experience.

Dr. Lai’s work on Taiwanese immigration to Hawaii, the 228 Incident’s impact on the diaspora, and the formation of Taiwanese American identity made him a fitting recipient of an award named after the father of Taiwanese literature.
