Biography
Rev. Rei-Hsiung Chang (張瑞雄牧師) was a pivotal figure in establishing Taiwanese American Christian worship in Los Angeles. In 1970, while serving in a Methodist church in Fresno, California, he saw that there was no Taiwanese church in the greater Los Angeles area and decided to plant a new church.
Formosan Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles (FPCLA)
- First worship gathering: August 9, 1970, at Centenary United Methodist Church on Normandy Avenue and 35th Street
- FPCLA officially became a church on May 20, 1973
- First Taiwanese-speaking church recognized by Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA)
- Spent three years under the supervision of PCUSA’s New Church Development Committee before official recognition (May 1971)
- First organizing pastor hired: September 1971
- Founding membership: 37 adult Christians, 43 seekers, 33 children
