Michelle Wu (吳弭)
Michelle Wu (吳弭, born 1972) is a Taiwanese American politician who has served as the Mayor of Boston, Massachusetts since 2021. She is the first Asian American mayor of Boston.
Early Life and Education
Michelle Wu was born in Boston, Massachusetts to parents who immigrated from Taiwan. She grew up in the Boston area and developed an interest in public service from an early age.
Wu earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban Studies from Boston College in 1994 and her Juris Doctor degree from Boston College Law School in 1997.
Political Career
Boston City Council (2014-2021)
Wu served on the Boston City Council from 2014 to 2021, representing the South Boston, Dorchester, and Mattapan districts. She chaired the City Council and was known for her advocacy on:
- Housing affordability and tenant rights
- Public transportation improvements
- Climate action and sustainability
- Community development
Mayor of Boston (2021-present)
In November 2021, Wu was elected Mayor of Boston, defeating incumbent Marty Walsh in a runoff election. She was sworn in as the 56th Mayor of Boston on January 4, 2022.
As mayor, Wu has focused on:
